About
Roppongi (in Japanese you slightly 'pause' at the "p", Rop...pongi; 六本木) which literally means "Six Trees" is best known for it's "nightlife" (a famous place "where foreigners generally go") and Roppongi Hills (high end shopping district and apartment buildings). During the day it a normal city in greater tokyo but at night it becomes a mojor "playground" for generally young adults. If you get off the subway in Roppongi in the evening on a Friday or Saturday night you will see a lot of young adults heading out to party.
After WW2 the United States occupied several facilities in the Roppongi Area. Japanese restaurants, pool halls, bars, and brothels followed the "rich" Americans which catered to the US military personnel but were also frequented by Japanese customers. In the late 1960s Roppongi became popular for is disco scene and the "nightlife" reputation of Roppongi began to boom. During the 70's - 90's many foreigner bars popped up and the Rock-n-Roll era took hold in Roppongi too. Currently you can find almost any type of nightlife establishment in Roppongi from small and quaint bars to Mega Clubs. In the early 2000's "Roppongi Hills" and the "Izumi Garden Tower" were built giving the area a major economic boost and modern feeling to the area. In 2006 the "Tokyo Midtown Project" was completed and includes the first Tokyo Ritz-Carlton Hotel, continuing the trend of an "upscale" area. There are also many foreign embassies in the area which give the area an "international" feel.
Note: If you go to Roppongi for the nightlife be very careful as to which establishment you enter. By looking at the Roppongi Area Map below you can see a darker red area that indicates "Hustlers". That area is notorious for very (VERY) pushy hustlers who try to get you to go to their "bar". Complaints are constantly logged with the police but the police never do anything about it (strange). The bars up near Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown are much more classy and up-scale... although, slightly more expensive. The bars and clubs in the old traditional Roppongi (the light red area) are rough and can be wild.
