About
Shinagawa is a major business and transportation hub in Tokyo. In the old Edo Period (1603-1867) Shinagawa was the first major stop from Tokyo to Kyoto on the Tokaido Road [might want to check out the family boardgame Tokaido as well]. These days it has grown to become one of Tokyo's busiest stations and mainly caters to businessmen and hotels. The East side of the station (toward Tokyo Bay) is called the Konan exit and is mainly a large business district while the West side of the station called Takanawa exit has many large hotels and shopping malls. Many major rail lines connect at Shinagawa including the Yamanote Line, the Tokaido Shinkansen and connections to both Haneda and Narita Airports.
Although Shinagawa is a place many tourists may find themselves staying at (because of all the big city hotels), it's not really considered a "Tourist Attractions" because it is a city that is mainly for business. The big hotels do have bowling ally's, shopping malls, the Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa aquarium and various places to eat but Shinagawa is basically just a modern concrete city. It is fun to walk through Shinagawa station around 8:00 a.m. during rush hour from the West exit to the East exit as you will find yourself amongst a massive stream of businessmen rushing on their way to work. However, even if you do stay in Shinagawa it's a very easy and quick ride in either direction on the Yamanote Line to Shibuya / Shinjuku or Tokyo / Ueno direction. Furthermore it's a convenient place to arrive at or leave from on your way to Narita or Haneda airports.
