Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
About
The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum is a National World Class museum which is supported by the Japanese government. It is located in Ueno Park near Ueno Station on the JR Yamanote line. The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum itself is a large, red brick building and sits back/right area of the park (from Ueno Station) next to the Ueno Zoo. The museum has had a presence in the park since 1926 but most of the added buildings date much later than that with most added in 1975 by architect Kunio Maekawa and then a major "renewal" done in 2010-2012.
Basic entry to the museum is FREE but if you want to view any of the special World Class exhibits (such as Leonardo da Vinci, El Greco and Van Goh) that regularly change throughout the year, a ticket is required. Every exhibit has different pricing so you will have to visit the museums official website to see what the current exhibit and price for entry is. The regular free area of The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum has six galleries displaying various artistic genres, including painting, ceramics, sculpture and calligraphy. The displays showcase Japanese and Foreign artist pieces. The Museum Gallery is where the museum showcases it's special exhibitions.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum also has a restaurant and museum shop where you can buy various gifts and trinkets.
