About


Ueno Zoo is Japan's oldest and largest zoo and easily accessible. Just a 5 min. - 10 min. walk from Ueno station through Ueno park and you can reach the zoo entrance. Opening in 1882 as a menagerie as part of the National Museum of History at that time, it was gradually transformed into a zoo by naturalist Tanaka Yoshio. At the zoo they have a Sumatran Tiger, Lowland Gorilla and Panda which are all very popular. Ueno Zoo is an "International Class" level zoo with over 2600 individual animals representing 460 species.

Hours: Ueno Zoo opens 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (tickets sold until 4:00 p.m.)
Closed: Every Monday (closes Tuesday if Monday is a public holiday or Tokyo Citizen's Day [Oct 1]) and December 29 through January 1.
