About
Arashiyama is a district in West Kyoto and is the 2nd most popular sightseeing area in Kyoto. Arashiyama is filled with temples and shrines, but the most popular attraction is the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. There are some "touristy" spots (the main street of Arashiyama and the famous Togetsu-kyo Bridge) but there are some quiet areas too. However, the "touristy" spots are fun too so try not to miss anything! The area became popular in the Heian Period (794-1185) because nobles, aristocrats and the rich would get out of Kyoto and enjoy the close yet very green Arashiyama area. Arashiyama has a lot to offer from just sightseeing to a theme park to many temples and parks.
You may want to rent a bicycle for a day (around a thousand yen), this makes visiting the area convenient, easy and fun... just please take care when riding because some streets are very narrow (and in Japan traditionally cars have the right-of-way). The area is especially busy during spring (cherry blossoms) and fall (Autumn colors). During the summer there is also the Japanese traditional cormorant fishing event(s).
Arashiyama is in the far west of Kyoto, tucked along the base of the Arashiyama Mountains (which means in Japanese; "Storm Mountains"). The area is quite a distance from downtown Kyoto and takes appoximately 30 min. to get there by train, bus or taxi. However, don't let a little 30 min. trip stop you from visiting the area because it has so much to offer. Feel free to print the map below if you like and below the map are links to popular destinations.
