The Sagano Scenic Railway (in Japanese; Sagano Torokko トロッコ嵯峨) is another relaxing way to take a break from all the walking tourists typically do in Kyoto. The ride is pretty quick, only 25 minutes, and gives you a chance to rest your feet, see some pretty Japanese scenery and just enjoy a ride. The scenic train takes a slow pace up the canyon and seating is situated so you are looking out the windows or open air cars. Of course the ride is extremely popular in the fall when the leaves are turning colors. No reservations are required but all seats are "reserved" and can purchase them at Torokko Saga Station. If it is Autumn, you may want to buy seats early as the ride is extremely popular with the Japanese at that time. Once you arrive at the terminus you can either, 1.) Ride the same train back, 2.) walk over to the JR station and ride a normal train back to Arashiyama or Kyoto or 3.) ride a boat back on the Hozugawa River Cruise (recommended). If you want to take the river cruise there is a bus that will take you down to the river... plenty of help in English abound.

Going: Board the sightseeing train by going to JR Sagaarashiyama station and then walking over to Saga Torokko Station from where the train leaves (they are basically in the same building).
Returning: The sightseeing train ends at Torokko Kameoka Station. Its a 5 minute walk to Umahori Station where you can take the JR Sagano lin back to Arashiyama or Kyoto.

Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (until 5:00 p.m. on busy days). Trains normally do NOT run on Wednesdays except if the Wednesday is a National Holiday. Trains generally depart every hour.
