The building for the National Museum of Japanese History in Chiba Japan
About
The National Museum of Japanese History is a great museum, especially for history buffs. The museum is located about 1.5 - 2 hours from Tokyo in the city of Sakura on the grounds of Sakura Castle out in Chiba Prefecture near Narita International Airport. The museum is large with six huge permanent galleries and lots of interesting displays and dioramas that span Japanese history from prehistoric times to the modern era. A seventh gallery hosts temporary exhibits that usually require an extra fee to visit (usually just a couple hundred yen extra). The National Museum of Japanese History opened in 1981 and focuses on the history, archaeology and culture of Japan throughout the ages. Although the museum is geared toward native Japanese speaking people, the museum does have some English signs/description and they do provide free audio guides at the front desk. If your interested in history museums, the Edo-Tokyo Museum near Tokyo Station in Ryogoku is another great museum and or the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno (a city in Tokyo) are other museums you might be interested in.
