Kinugawa Hot Springs (Kinugawa Onsen) near Nikko Japan
About
Kinugawa Onsen is a popular Hot Springs resort town up near the Nikko area about 2-3 hours north of Tokyo on the train. The town sits along side the Kinugawa River in Tochigi Prefecture. Ever since the Meiji Era the town has been a destination for Tokyo'ites to get out and go to a Hot Springs. During the 1970's the town really started to boom and went through a heavy "boom time" until... Japan's 1990's recession kicked in and cheap over-seas travel became popular. The town is much more quite now (and some hotels have been left abondoned which the town is currently removing and adding trails and parks) but the area is seeing a "semi-return" to popularity as over-seas travel has become more expensive and just the fact that Japanese love Hot Springs so, why not stay near home. Kinugawa Onsen is also very close and easily accessible by Tokyo making it a quick and relaxing trip.
The accommodations in the area are mostly "Hotel" style Onsens (Hot Springs). These are large luxurious "modern" style buildings and not the traditional "Ryokan" (Japanese Inn) type Onsen. All the hotels have incredibly good food, service and beautiful hot spring baths. Try a Japanese style massage after a long hot bath and you will sleep like you have never slept before!
There are two Theme Parks in Kinugawa Onsen that are very fun to visit. The first is Tobu World Square which is a "Miniatures" Theme Park (replicates famous buildings throughout the world) and the second, which is one of our favorites, is Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura which is an Edo Era replicated real town with characters and shows of the era. See the map below and the attractions below the map for more details.
Kinugawa Onsen is near Nikko and can can easily be reached by train (especially if you have a "Tobu Rail Pass").

Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura is a Theme Park in Japan near Nikko City. It opened in 1986 and is like a "Western Town" in the US with the park re-creating a complete "Edo Era" town and filling it with "Edo Era" characters. The "Edo Town" they re-create is based on the "Golden Age" of Edo (Tokyo), called the Genroku Era. The town is very large and has recreated buildings such as government buildings, Samurai residences, shops and more. The "Characters" are always in character and even talk and act like they did during...see more details.

Tobu World Square is a "Miniatures" Theme Park near Nikko Japan that was built in 1993. It is very close to "Kinugawaonsen" Station and in the town of Kinugawa Onsen (a Hot Springs town). It is also close to "Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura" so it is possible to make a full day of it by visiting both and then maybe stay at an Onsen (Japanese Hot Springs) in town for the night...see more details.
