About
Tsukamoto Art Museum is a small private collection of Japanese Katana swords out in Chiba Prefecture in the town of Sakura. Admission is free and curators are anxious and happy to answer any questions you may have. The Museum also responds to requests for valuations and other advice about Japanese swords. Tsukamoto Art Museum was established by Tsukamoto Sozan, a businessman who was raised in Sakura. Approximately 20 items are exhibited on a three-month rotation, selected from the 400 swords and 250 pieces of fittings and scabbards.
It was first opened in Tokyo’s Ginza district with the name of Japanese Sword Art Museum in 1965. It later moved to the city of Chiba and the name was changed to Tsukamoto Art Museum. It moved again in 1983 to its founder’s home town of Sakura, when it became an incorporated foundation. If you like the Japanese Swords in general, you might also want to consider visiting the Tokyo National Museum (they have over 30 historical swords) and or the The Japanese Sword Museum (small collection but free entry) both in Tokyo.
