Hakone Komagatake Ropeway by Σ64 (CC BY-SA 3.0)

The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway is an "Aerial Lift Line" in Hakone famous for its surrounding views of the Hakone Area and Mt. Fuji.  The ropeway starts down near Lake Ashinoko and climbs to the top of Mt. Komagatake and was built in 1963 by Izu Hakone Railway.  The Komagatake Ropeway reaches the top of Mt. Komagatake in 7 minutes by a comfortable ropeway tram car.  The total length of the ropeway is 1800 meters and riding the ropeway you’ll see Mt. Fuji and a chain of Hakone mountains on the left with Odawara, Yokohama, Ohshima Island, and Sagami Bay on the right and and Ashinoko Lake and Suruga Bay behind you (all depending on weather conditions of course).  There is a lot to see in the Hakone area and soaking in a Hot Springs at your hotel at night is not to be missed!  If you would like to stay in the Hakone area take a look at our Lodging in the Hakone Area page.

The top (end point) of the Komagatake Ropeway is Mt. Komagatake, a 1,357 meter lava dome created by a Hakone volcanic eruption 40,000 years ago. About 2,400 years ago, the top of this mountain became a holy area for mountain ascetics.  There are no trees on top of Mt. Komagatake because a lava flow hardened and larger trees can't grow well.  There are many paths at the top that give you many different views of the surrounding area including Mt. Fuji, the shrine, Sagami Bay and Odawara.

The best time for a great view of Mt. Fuji is during the winter and clear brisk mornings.  Later in the day the area becomes hazier. Sunset in late autumn and winter is another good chance.  Other times during the year it is "hit and miss" especially because Japan gets so much precipitation and Mt. Fuji itself is so high it generates clouds in most afternoons.

The Hakone Shrine is also within walking distance of the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway and highly suggest you make a visit if time allows.
