Yomiuri Land near Shinjuku in Tokyo Japan
About
Yomiuri Land is a Theme Park / Amusement park in the West suburbs of Tokyo. They bill themselves as, "Tokyo's largest amusement park!" Ok... let's get something strait, officially "Yes"... they may be the biggest amusement park in Tokyo Prefecture and it is a large park but this is just a slick marketing tactic since Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea are in Chiba Prefecture. In "Greater Tokyo" (what the general population feels is Tokyo proper), the two Disneyland parks are MUCH larger than Yomiuri Land so don't go to Yomiuri Land expecting a Disney sized theme park.
The park focuses on traditional amusement park thrilling rides like roller coasters, Ferris wheel, carnival games and has some variety shows... although targeted at Japanese with silly character shows for kids and idol group type stuff. Recently the park has started an illumination show at night which is getting rave reviews by visitors. In the summer they have a pool section which is also very large but tries to accommodate the greater population of Tokyo! Which means... it can get jam packed during the summer holiday months and weekends. The best time to visit Yomiuri Land (like anything else) is during non-holiday, weekdays when the park can get quite empty and you can jump on all the rides without having to wait in line! If you go during July or Augest... be prepared to be very hot under the summer sun and waiting in long lines. Overall the park is very fun for thrill seekers as it is a large amusement park with lots of fun rides. It may not be a "once in a lifetime visit to Japan tourist destination" (as Disney Sea would be the better option) but for those who live in Japan or will be spending more time in Japan, Yomiuri Land can be a fun spot to enjoy a day.Access
