About
Yokohama Chinatown (in Japanese; Yokohama Chukagai 横浜中華街) is Japan's largest Chinatown, that is located in central Yokohama. The Chinatown quickly developed right after the port of Yokohama had been opened in 1859. It became the residence of the many Chinese traders who settled down in the city. Today, a large number of Chinese stores and restaurants can be found in the narrow and colorful streets of Chinatown. There are four colorful gates stand at the entrances to Chinatown, and five more gates can be found within. The Kanteibyo is a popular destination which is the colored temple in the center of Chinatown. Japanese from all over Japan (and especially Tokyo) pack this place on the weekends... and they should, the Chinese Food is excellent. There are literally hundreds of little shops and restaurants to sort through but most all have pretty good food. If your in Yokohama for a visit, don't forget to stroll through the main street of Yokohama Chinatown to experience something quite unique.
