About
Yamate and Motomachi (in Japanese; Yamate 山手, Motomachi 元町) remains popular among tourists and locals since the Yokohama Port was opened 150 years ago. Motomachi prospered as a shopping street where they originally used to sell daily goods to the foreign residents of Yamate. Each store sells original clothes, shoes, and goods, attracting visitors from throughout the country, making Motomachi a trendsetting town. Though it became popular, the Yamate area retains a number of sites relating to its history as the main residential district of Westerners in Yokohama.
