Yamadera Temple near Yamagata Japan by Douglas P Perkins (CC BY 3.0)
About
Founded in 860 by the priest Jikaku Daishi (his posthumous name), Yamadera (Yama-dera or Yama Dera) Temple (in Japanese: 山寺, which means appropriately so, "Mountain Temple") is a famously scenic temple located in the mountains North East of Yamagata city. The temple grounds reach high up a steep mountainside. From the grounds there are great views of the valley and town below. The temple is especially popular in the Autumn when the leaves are changing. The reds, golds, and browns mixed with the temple "hanging" on the cliff make for some spectacular photographs.
