About
Tsukiji Honganji is a Buddhist Temple of the Jodo Sect. It is very near Ginza and Tsukiji and easy to visit but... not exactly what you might expect from a Japanese temple. Rebuilt in 1934 out of concrete, this Japanese Buddhist temple does not look or feel like a traditional Japanese temple in any sense.
Originally this sects temple was the temple of Edo Asakusa Gobo in Asakusa, built in 1617. This original temple burned down in 1657 and the Shogunate of the time did not want it rebuilt in the same place (they had other plans) so the temple was moved to it's current location in Tsukiji. Once again destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, the current temple was designed by a University of Tokyo professor and rebuilt in it's current state.
Although the temple is not... what you would expect visually, the temple is a popular pilgrimage destination because of the the artifacts is contains of Prince Shotoku, Shinran Shonin and Shonyo Shonin. It is also the mourning place of some famous Japanese people and entertainers such as Hiroaki Shukuzawa (a well loved rugby coach) and Hideto Matsumoto (a Japanese musician as the lead guitarist in X Japan).
As a "tourist", you may not want to put this destination on your "must do" list but if you make your way to the Tsukiji Fish Market and have an extra hour or so, walk on up to the temple and give it a look.
