About
As of October 6, 2018 the Fish Market has moved to Toyosu, See our Toyosu Fish Market page for details. The original fish market at Tsukiji had a 83 year history but the government decided that for various reasons it needed to be moved to a newer, cleaner, larger area. The Tsukiji Fish Market has now become the Tsukiji Outer Market where many shops remain but many have closed. The area still has many interesting shops and restaurants but the question remains as if it will be able to survive without the actual Fish Market.
Do you love sushi? Tsukiji Market is the Mecca of sushi! Come see where it all "really" happens. The best... yes, the BEST fish in the world pass through this market on a daily basis. In actuality, Tsukiji Market is a "real" large wholesale market for fish, fruits and vegetables... not just a tourist destination. Tsukiji Market is known as one of the world's largest fish markets, handling over 2,000 tons of marine products per day. In 2016 it is "planned" that the market will be moved to Toyosu but we'll see if that actually happens.
The market is a great place to visit for two reasons, 1.) you can enjoy a "real" fish market atmosphere with many kinds and variety of fresh fish and other seafood and the busy atmosphere of scooters, trucks, sellers and buyers hurrying around, and 2.) you can eat... EAT! great sushi! Yes, there are many fabulous sushi shops around the market where you can find the freshest and best sushi around. The numbers of visitors have increased so much over recent years, that they have become a problem to the course of business and being the hindrance of trucks passing by, as the aging market's infrastructure was not anticipated to serve as a tourist spot. In order to avoid interference with business, different rules should be followed when visiting the different areas of the market... after all, it's not just a Theme Park but a real market!
