Toshimaen is an amusement park in the North-West suburbs of Tokyo. It is an older / retro traditional style amusement park (started with a popular roller coaster in 1965) with over 30 rides including 3 roller coasters and a large water park that is open in the summer. Although the park has been around for a long time, it is very clean, well taken care of and extremely safe. Toshimaen can be reached from the Roppoingi/Shinjuku area in 30 to 45 min., from Ikebukuro in about 15 to 30 min. and offers fun and excitement for everyone.
Toshimaen is especially popular among teenagers, couples on dates and families with young children. It has an old fashioned feel to it with lots of great rides, decent food and things to do. There are thrilling rides like the the roller coasters and the Corkscrew and Cyclone while more benign rides for younger children. Rides include a 100-year-old carousel, the 3 roller coasters, various spinning carnival rides, bumper cars, a haunted house and Mystery Castle. Toshimaen also has an insect museum, an amusement arcade and even an indoor fishing facility! Nearby, there is an Onsen Spa (Hot Springs) and a large beautiful Japanese garden (landscaped by renowned architect Kenzo Ogata). Seasonal activities are also popular, including cherry blossom viewing in spring. In summer, cool off at a water park equipped with wave pools and water slides, as well as an Olympic-sized swimming pool. In winter, go ice-skating at the outdoor rink.
The park offers a pay per ride scheme or a "Ride Anything for one price" wristband style feature. Easy to get to on the Tokyo Metro. Note that Toshimaen is VERY strict on tattoos at the water park. They WILL remove you from the premises if you have a tattoo so do not go there if you have tattoos.
