About
Tofukuji Temple (in Japanese; Tofuku Ji 東福寺) is one of the five great temples of the "Five Mountain System" of Zen Buddhism, Rinzai sect. It was "founded" in 1236 (exact date of completion not known) by a monk who had studied Rinzai Zen Buddhism in China. Like many wooden structures of ancient times... unfortunately the original structure burned down in the 15th century but was rebuilt using the exact original plans. The temple contains an artifact painting of Buddha on his death bed (2nd largest in Japan measuring 7x14 meters) but unfortunately this artifact is display very rarely to the public. The gardens around the temple are also very beautiful and worth a visit. Tofukuji is popular with the Japanese in the Autumn has the temple grounds has many large trees that turn magnificent colors in the fall. There is also a bridge on/near the temple grounds called Tsutenkyo Bridge and is lined by lush maple trees. The 100 meter long bridge is covered with the maple tree leaves especially in late November.
