About
Built in 1899, Tamozawa Imperial Villa (in Japanese; Tamozawa Goyotei 田母沢御用邸) is a beautiful relic of Japanese traditional architecture and style. The Villa blends traditional Edo and early modern Meiji Period architecture throughout its 106 rooms. The home, palace, villa... was originally built in Tokyo for the Tokugawa Imperial family and then moved here to Nikko to become an even larger summer residence and retreat for the family. After World War 2, it suffered sever neglect but in early 2000 the villa was reopened after extensive renovations. Tamozawa Imperial Villa is very interesting because not only does it blend "Edo" with "Meiji" but also Western elements are present too, like carpeting and chandeliers in some rooms. As you stroll through the villa, you will soon be in awe of its size but actually the current building is only one third the size of the original structure. After a "busy" day at the favorite tourist destination Toshogu Shrine, you will definitely enjoy a relaxing stroll through this lovely and pleasant villa and garden. Take a breath and sit down on a tatami mat and stare into the beauty of the garden... you will slip back in time.
Tamozawa Imperial Villa is in the Nikko Area of Japan. See our Nikko Area page for a complete guide.
