Entrance to Takeshita Street (Takeshita Dori) in Harajuku by Colorado Jones
About
Takeshita Street (in Japanese; Takeshita Dori 竹下通り) is not only a popular tourist destination it is "THE location" for teenybopper Japanese boys and girls in Tokyo. If you go there on a weekend, take a chill pill and just relax as your are shuffled through the street amongst thousands of teens shopping for "Idol" goods and teen fashion. Don't worry, it easy to find, Just exit the "Omotesando Exit" and there it is (across the street).
Takeshita Street is the place your going to see those famous "Cute" style Japanese girls. The street is a pedestrian only avenue lined with little gadget, idol, fashion, tourist, bags and who knows what type of shops. Please feel free to enter any of these shops, take a look around and buy something unique you can take or wear back home! Of course the typcial "chain" places are here too but why shop there when you can get the same stuff back home... find a little entrance, walk down some stairs and find some really cool little unique boutiques to pick up something nobody will have. There are also a bunch of "Crepe" shops the younger Japanese girls seem to love and actually... are quite good. For around 500 yen you can get a chocolate and vanilla ice cream crepe (or a variety of other combinations).
One of the uniquely interesting aspects about Takeshita Street is its "Idol" shops. Japan is still (and always will be?) big on "Idols" ("Idol" meaning a young boy or girl designated a "star" and marketed by a production company.... usually for "looks" only. Who needs talent when you have good marketing). These shops sell a variety of items, mainly pictures (head shots) of these "famous" idols. There are both girl and boy idols (it seems in Takeshita Street there are more younger girls buying boy idol goods than boys buying girl idol goods) so take your pic and buy a head shot to put in your wallet. Show your friend, "look at my idol!" and see the blank stares on their faces.
