A castle was built here in 1526 by Atagi Haruoki and then conquered by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the late 1500's. The castle was abolished in the 1630's. The current Sumoto Castle (in Japanese; Sumoto Jyou 洲本城) is a fabrication and not historically accurate to what the original looked like but the walls are original. The view from atop the mountain where the castle sits is quite impressive, especially on a sunny day. It is kind of difficult getting to the castle but if you are traveling around the Kansai area (or live there), you may want to consider a trip to the castle and Awaji Island.

Its not easy getting to Sumoto Castle as no trains run through Awaji Island. The best method is a bus to Sumoto city and then walk.
Awaji Highway Bus from Kobe Sannomiya to Sumoto Bus Center; Then a 20 min walk.
