Shoren In Temple in Kyoto by Graham Stanley, CC BY 2.0
About
The Shoren-in Temple (in Japanese; Shoren-in 青蓮院門跡) is a Buddhist temple and is part of the 5 Monzeki temples in Kyoto. Most of the heat priests in this temple originally belonged to the imperial family. Anyone can experience the solemn and peaceful surrounding, similar to the ambiance of the Imperial Palace. Shoren-in was actually temporarily used as the Imperial Palace for a short period after the Great Kyoto Fire in 1788. An interesting feature of the grounds are the huge 800 year old camphor trees. There is also a beautiful garden, waterfall and pond with Koi. When going inside the temple, visitors will the Kachoden drawing room, which has portraits on the walls and paintings on the sliding doors (fusuma).
