About

Osaka Shinsekai by Nao Iizuka

The Shinsekai, which means "New World", is an old neighborhood next to South Osaka City's downtown area. It is called "New World" because at the time the area was built in 1912 it was very modern... modeled after New York and Paris at the time. However, after World War 2 the area was not restored to it's formal glory and became a poor and run-down section of town known to be Osaka's "Most Dangerous" area. Some Osakans won't step foot in the area but it definitely has it's charms, history and unique identity. You'll find homeless people, prostitutes, mafia and even transvestites wandering it's streets. Among that crowd you will also find low cost restaurants, cheap clothing stores, theaters, and Pachinko Parlors. Tourists and even locals will take pleasure in the cheap taverns and cheap eating places throng around 130 m-tall Tsutenkaku Tower, a symbol of Osaka built to resemble the Eiffel Tower in Paris. There is also an observation deck where a statue of Billiken stands. It is a lucky mascot which is believed to make your wish come true.
