About

The Senjogahara Marshland is between Lake Chuzenji and Lake Yumoto.  You can take a nice easy hike within this marshland and see some beautiful Japanese natural scenery.  Every season offers some exceptional views but Autumn is a busy season here and many Japanese tourists flood the area. There is a trail,  Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail, that runs from Ryuzu Waterfall to Yudaki Waterfall (with a few "alternate" trails). This trail offers some of the best hiking in the Nikko National Park.

The Tourist Information Center in at Tobu Nikko Station has an excellent English map which clearly defines the trails that run through Senjogahara Marshland. The full trail, from Ryuzu Waterfall to Yudaki Waterfall is about 8 kilometers and takes the average person 3 to 4 hours to complete. Note that this trail is very simple, e.i. flat, and great for families or couples that would like to take a nice stroll through nature (although on the weekends or during the fall season you won't get much privacy). The trails are open year round so prepare for each season, during winter this area gets quite a bit of snow (therefore the nearby ski area).

Closest Train Station: Nikko

Reached by car or bus, Senjogahara Marshland is just over an hour from Nikko Station. Take a "Tobu Bus" from Central Nikko bound for Yumoto Onsen, there are 1 to 2 buses an hour. To hike the trail, get off at "Ryuzu no taki" (to start from the southern end) or "Yumoto Onsen" (to start from the northern end). Note that during Autumn season traffic can get extremely heavy causing major delays (double or triple the normal travel time).
