Sekiyado Castle
About
Although Sekiyado Castle is rather small, never played a part in any major battles and is just a fabricated structure of typical Japanese Castle architecture to draw tourists (there was a real castle on the grounds but was removed during the Meiji Restoration), the Sekiyado Castle has 3 good points... 1.) The "real" castle that was here played a major strategic role in deterring the Date and Satake clans in the North from invading the Edo area, 2.) even though it is "fabricated", it is quite pretty and a well known spot to get beautiful pictures of the castle and Mt. Fuji in the background and 3.) the local museum on the castle and the era is very nice (although all Japanese, many pictures and items).
The castle was originally built around 1500 by a warlord at the time but was destroyed by the Hojo Clan of Odawara in the late 1500's. After the Hojo Clan was destroyed by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the castle was built once again by Matsudaira Yasumoto under the orders of Tokugawa to once again protect the Edo area from possible attacks from the North and control river traffic. The Kuze lord was installed to command the castle and that family continued to rule the castle until the castle was ordered destroyed in the Meiji Restoration.
