About
The Okada Museum of Art is a private museum in the Hakone Area that has a collection of pieces from antiquity to the modern era. It is a recently opened museum, opened in 2013 by Gambling Resort Mogul Okada Kazuo. The main theme of the museum is it's large collection of Chinese and Japanese ceramics and sculptures (on the first two floors) which include ancient Chinese bronze, Tang and Ming porcelain and early Japanese pottery. The upper floors consist mainly of Japanese art, with a variety of art forms and time periods represented. Most items on display are labeled with basic information in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. The museum is a modern building surrounded by expansive grounds that feature a Japanese garden, a teahouse and a cafe with hot spring foot bath. Note that the museum is rather strict on entry requiring guests to store phones, cameras, bags and even stationary in free lockers at the front. If you are thinking of staying a night or two in the Hakone area take a look at our Lodging in the Hakone Area page.
