About

The Nishiki Market (In Japanese; Nishiki Ichiba, "Ichiba" means market in Japanese, 京都錦市場商店街振興組合) is a five block long shopping street where it is composed of hundreds of shops and restaurants. It is a very large "Fresh Market" (like a "Farmers Market" in the US) downdown that runs parallel to Shijo Street. It is locally known as the "Kyoto's Kitchen". Locals and tourists are expected to find a long narrow busy yet inviting atmosphere. Some of the shops freely give out samples or sell sample dishes and skewers meant to be eaten then and there. There are also a few small restaurants and food stands selling ready made food.
