About
Nikolai-do, Saint Nicolai Church or Holy Resurrection Cathedral, is a Japanese Orthodox Church... an autonomous church within the Orthodox Church under the Russian Orthodox Church... yeah, complicated but nevertheless, a "Christian" building of worship. This church was founded in 1891 by St. Nicholas of Japan, a Russian Orthodox saint. It was not easy for a Russian-Christian in Japan... religious "freedom" was not exactly "free" at that time (grey area) and wars between Russia and Japan put a damper on sentiment toward a Russian Saint. The original cathedral was seriously damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake and much of the building had to be replaced but the church has survived turbulent times and is quite a popular attraction even for Japanese because of its unique structure.
Nikolai-do is in the Kanda and Ochanomizu area which has many other fun attractions too.
