About
The Nikko Kanaya Hotel claims to be the "oldest resort hotel in Japan". It opened in 1873 during the Meiji Era and is registered as a Japanese Tangible Cultural Property. Many foreign diplomats and intellectuals based in Tokyo visited (and visit) this resort hotel to escape the Tokyo heat during summer. Dr. Albert Einstein and Helen Keller stayed at this hotel when they came to Japan. The hotel is a mix of Japanese and Western architecture with a beautiful garden that has a view of Nikko's mountain range as the backdrop. Out and past the garden there are well-manicured foot paths that will take you down to the Otanigawa River's edge from where you can even get a nice view of Shinkyo Bridge.
To get to the hotel you can either jump in a taxi (about 500 yen) or ride a free shuttle from the Toku-Nikko Station. Shuttles leave at 10:00 a.m., 12:10 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:10 p.m. with the ride to the hotel taking approximately 10 min.
