About
The Nanzenji temple (in Japanese; Nanzen Ji 南禅寺) is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto located at the Higashiyama mountains and is considered as one of the most important Zen temples in the country. It is rich in history as it dates back in mid 13th century when Emperor Kameyama made it as retirement villa. The Nanzenji Temple is the headquarters of the Nanzen-ji branch of Rinzai Zen. Destroyed by fire no less than 3 times it's final "re-build" started in 1597 and continued into the Edo era. The temple grounds are open to the public free of charge but there is a fee for entering temple buildings and sub-temples.
