Notice: Due to recent volcanic activity there currently is a 1 km (.6 mile) "No Entry" rule in effect for Mount Shirane. This includes the hiking trails, parking lot, rest house, etc. The road between Kusatsu and Shiga Kogen CAN BE used but no stopping or parking is allowed. Furthermore buses from Kusatsu to Mount Shirane are not operating. Please visit the official "Visit Gunma" website page for current information.
Mount Shirane or Mount Kusatsu Shirane (2,171 m, 7,123 ft) is an active volcano near the popular hot springs town of Kusatsu It is also one of Japan's "most famous mountains" as the crater lake at the summit is known for it's beautiful "Emerald Green Water". With a pH of approximately 1.0, it is known as the most acidic lake in Japan. Being one of Japan's most famous mountains it is a popular spot for Japanese tourists to hike and enjoy nature The trail from Shirane Resthouse to Yugama Crater Lake is a very easy hike and takes less than ten minutes along a paved trail Once you reach the top, your reward is a gorgeous view of the sulfurous, "Emerald Green" Yugama Crater Lake and the surrounding mountain ranges.
You can get to the Shirane Resthouse by car or bus (leaving the Kusatsu Bus Terminal, 1,130 yen) By car or bus it is approximately a 30 min. drive from Kusatsu Note that the road closes in the winter from mid November to mid April because of heavy snow.
