Kyoto Tower and the Kyoto Skyline on a sunny day
About
Directly opposite (and viewable) from Kyoto station, the Kyoto Tower (in Japanese; Kyoto Tawaa 京都タワー) gives a 360 panoramic view of the city. It is directly above a 3 star hotel and was completed in 1964. Its observation deck is located at the top floor 100 meters above the sea level. It gives a wonderful view of the city especially at night as the city lights up and the gently sloping ridge of the thirty-six peaks of Higashiyama. The tower is a nine-story building with three sub-floors serves as the foundation for the Tower and was built to withstand earthquakes and typhoons. The tower (like the current station) drew up much controversy as many residents felt the "look" was too modern for Kyoto. Even today feeling remain divided feeling the tower is either beneficial or down right "ugly". However, the view from the top is quite amazing in the day or night.
