About
The Kyoto National Museum (in Japanese; Kyōto Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan 京都国立博物館) is one of the major art museums in Japan. Construction of the museum was finished in 1895 and opened in 1897 and is considered as one of the oldest and most distinguished museums in Japan. The museum is home to different rotating exhibitions like archaeological relics, sculptures, ceramics, calligraphy, costumes and paintings. It also hosts special exhibitions located at the original main building that was constructed during the Meiji Period in 1895. Originally the museum was built to hold, store and show artifacts from regional temples, shrines and castles but they now house some "pre-modern" Japanese works also. The museum is famous for its collection of ancient and rare Chinese and Japanese sutras (a Buddhist or Jain scripture).
