Kusatsu Kataoka Tsurutaro Museum
About
Kataoka Tsurutaro is a Japanese celebrity, actor and artist. Originally he became most famous as a comedian on various Japanese variety shows but started becoming famous as a paint and calligraphy artist around 1989. The Kusatsu Kataoka Tsurutaro Museum opened in the adjoining Kusatsu hotel in 1998 is one of the museums which features him. The Kusatsu Kataoka Tsurutaro Museum's concept is an "Onsen Hotel where visitors can enjoy Kataoka Tsurutaro’s works while wearing Yukata and Geta sandals." The museum displays around 350 art pieces by Kataoka which includes Bokusaiga (picture painted with Indian ink), calligraphy and pottery. The museum shop inside sells its original items which are only available here such as postcards designed by him. Exhibitions changes 4 times a year, so visitors can enjoy different art depending on the season. There is an audio guide which your can rent for 300 yen which has Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. However, some of the art pieces only have Japanese translations.
