Pathway up to Mt Kurama near Kyoto in Kurama town by Yiannis Theologos Michellis (CC BY-SA 2.0)
About
Kurama is a small town about an hour from Kyoto that offers a nice Japanese town, a temple (Kurama-dera) and an Onsen (Japanese Hot Springs bath). It is definitely worth a "day trip" if these three things interest you. You can enjoy a nice ride on Japanese trains, walk around the town a bit, visit Kurama-dera temple, have some lunch and then take a nice soaking dip in Kurama Onsen with its indoor and outdoor baths. Although the baths are located at the hotel (Kurama Onsen), day dippers can pay 1000 yen to use the outside bath or 2500 yen to use both outside and inside.
Kurama-dera is above the town on a steep mountainside. It is quite a hike up to the temple (30-40min.) but your lucky because a cable car takes you half the way (100 yen). Once you are up there though, the view is quite nice. You can actually continue hiking along a trail that takes you to Kibune (search this site) which is another popular town for local Kyoto residents. The hike is "up and down" and can take an hour or two so be prepared.
