About
Koishikawa Botanical Garden is a property of the country's most prestigious university, the Tokyo University Graduate School of Science. The Botanical Gardens are not only the oldest in Japan, but also have a prominent and long history by world wide standards. The Botanical Gardens originated as the Koishikawa Medicinal Herb Garden, which was established in 1684 by the Tokugawa Shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration in 1877 during the Meiji Era, this "Medicinal Herb Garden" became part of the university and the study of botanical research. There are many historic plants, over 4,000 plant species, and ruins that indicate the long history of the Botanical Gardens.
Koishikawa Botanical Garden is also considered one of Tokyo's most pleasant and interesting places to view cherry blossoms in the spring, because it does not get as crowded as other "Hanami" (Cherry Blossom Watching) spots and features cherry trees of various species.
The University also runs a botanical garden up in Nikko for "high elevation plants and vegetation" called the Nikko Botanical Garden.
