About

The Kiyomizu-dera pogoda off in the distance

One of the most well known and famous temples in Kyoto, The Kiyomizu-dera temple is an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple is located at the Otowa Mountain at Eastern Kyoto where it was established in 778. Though the temple's foundation has been burned down many times, it was rebuilt during the Edo Period. It has a main hall or the Hondo where it is considered as a national treasure. It is also a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage as a part "f" Ancient Kyoto Historic Monuments. The temple is best visited during the cherry blossom and the colored leaves in autumn but is beautiful year round.

The main gate or Mon to Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto Japan

Kiyomizu temple is dedicated to Kannon goddess, who lives in the "Happy World" called "Budarak". In ancient times (mainly the Edo Period), there were many who dreamed of going to that "Happy World" and attempted suicide by jumping off the balcony/stage. During the Edo historical period (1700s - 1900s) there are records of 234 people jumping off the balcony, but surprisingly 85% of them survived and returned to ordinarily life. PS, if you "survive" you were supposed to be granted a "Happy Life" in this life anyways!
