About
Kanda Myojin Shrine has a history spanning over 1,200 years. The structure itself has been rebuilt many times, destroyed by fires and earthquakes, but is a very important Shinto shrine because even Tokugawa Ieyasu paid his respects here. It is said the original shrine was built in 730 near the current Otemachi district. In 1603 the shrine was moved near it's current location to accommodate space for Edo Castle (and because Tokugawa Ieyasu felt uncomfortable to have his castle built next to the shrine which enshrines the powerful spirit of Taira No Masakado, a Samurai Rebel) and then moved once again in 1616 to it's current location in Kanda. The very impressive entrance gate, Zuishin-mon (隨神門), was built recently in 1995 out of cypress wood. The Shrine itself enshrines two gods, Daikokuten Ebisu and Taira No Masakado which belong to the "Seven Gods of Fortune", so a very popular place for businessmen to visit and pray to be successful.
Kanda Myojin Shrine is in the Kanda and Ochanomizu area which has many other fun attractions too. Kanda Myojin Also hosts the Kanda Festival.
