Iyashi No Sato in Yamanashi Prefecture Japan
About

Iyashi No Sato sits on the site of a former farming village on the western shores of Lake Saiko. The original village was destroyed by a typhoon in 1966 but in the early 2000's the village's traditional thatched roofed houses were reconstructed and then the area reopened as an "Open Air Museum" and "Traditional Craft Village" where people can learn about the culture and try out and purchase different local handicrafts. This "Open Air Museum" makes a great destination for those who want to see and "get the feeling" of a traditional Japanese village. There are also many excellent photo opportunities and when the weather cooperates you can even get a nice shot of Mt. Fuji in the background.

The Museum has reconstructed about 20 houses. Some of the houses contain shops, restaurants, museums and art galleries while others specializes in a traditional craft such as weaving and pottery. Some of the traditional craft shops allow visitors to try their hand at making some of the products. You can try making soba noodles, washi paper (Japanese paper) and charcoal. However, the most popular (and the most crowded) house is the "Portrait Studio" where you can get dressed in kimono or samurai armour! You can get dressed up and have a photo session. Next to the Portrait Studio there is bridge where you can go to post and get some great shot whith the traditional Japanese houses in the background.
