A view over the valley from Hottarakashi Onsen
About
Hottarakashi Onsen is a popular "Day Trip" or "One Night Stay" hot springs for those living in Tokyo. It is most famous for it's view as it sits up high on top of a mountain and over-looks a valley below. If the weather is nice and the air is clear you can also see Mt. Fuji while sitting in the onsen. Many people visit the onsen before sunrise to sit in the onsen and catch the sunrise as the morning light strikes Mt. Fuji and the surrounding area. It is very possible to make a "Day Trip" to Hottarakashi Onsen from Tokyo although quite tiring and riding the trains for 5+ hours and sitting in the nice hot bath. The best idea would be to stay a night near Hottarakashi Onsen, get up early in the morning and enter that bath before sunrise, spend a couple leisurely hours in the bath while watching the sunrise and then come back to Tokyo around lunchtime.
Notes:
- This onsen is very close to the Puku Puku Onsen
- During certain times of the year this public onsen can become extremely crowded. If it's a holiday or the weekend, be prepared to be bathing with lots of people. Best to visit this hot springs on a normal weekday.
- You can buy a towel and amenities at the hot springs but if you can, it's a good idea to bring your own towel(s) and shampoo/soap after you get out.
- The public baths are kept pretty clean but the buildings and some aspects of Hottarakashi Onsen are slightly "old". Don't expect a super fancy and gorgeous onsen. Expect a typical "blue collar" Public Onsen where you can enjoy a nice hot springs bath and a great view.
- Male and Female baths are separate, this is NOT a mixed bathing facility.
- They have a dressing area, bathrooms and various restaurants you can eat at. People have said the food at Hottarakashi Onsen is quite good.
