The Higashiyama District is one of Kyoto's main attractions (this is said about many Kyoto attractions... well, there is so much to see!) in the eastern area because it is one of the best preserved areas in the city. It is a well preserved "Historic" district where you can experience "Traditional Kyoto" (not a grey/modern train station or white needle poking into the sky). The area between Kiyomizudera Temple and Yasaka Shrine is where you will want to stroll around the narrow lanes, wooden buildings and cute little shops. They have even done some "un-modernization" (removed telephone poles) to bring the area back to an old Kyoto vibe. The Higashiyama district has been a tourist destination for literally hundreds of years and and many eateries, trinket ships, confectioneries, pickled food, crafts and tea shops for everyone to enjoy. Everyone will experience the experience traditional old Kyoto especially when walking around Kiyomizudera and Yasaka Shrine.

The district is quite large and you could easily spend a day wandering about. If you walk directly through the area it's about a 1.5 mile (2 kilometer) walk but taking offshoot streets and snapping your camera will make time fly. One of the "Main" streets to visit is called, "Sannenzaka Street". If you get lost or need directions don't hesitate to ask someone for directions as the locals in Kyoto are extremely friendly and helpful. During march there is a festival called Hanatoro (10 days long) in which the streets are lined by thousands of lanterns making the area even more special and beautiful. The Higashiyama District in Kyoto is a "Must See" destination when you visit.
