About
The Hida Folk Village is an "Open-Air Museum" in Takayama Japan that contains around 25 old farmhouses in the traditional architectural style of the mountainous regions of Japan. Most interesting are the"steeply" thatched and shingled roofs of these farmhouses (so that the heavy snow will slide off). A lot of the buildings are original structures that range in age from 100 to 500 years and have been moved to this museum. The Hida Folk Village is very picturesque and is visited by many Japanese tourists as well as international tourists and sits on a hillside overlooking the Takayama Valley.

Many of the structures are filled with artifacts from their respective periods and open for exploration. Devices such as spindles, silk worm raising farms, cooking utensils, and even clothing of the era are set about in some of the buildings. One of the really nice aspects of the museum is that the building's indoor fireplaces are lit every morning, creating a great "atmosphere" not only for the eyes but also for the nose. The Hida Folk Village also has a workshop that demonstrates how some of Japan's famous handicrafts such as wood carving, tie-dying, weaving are lacquer are made. The open air museum is very close to Takayama station and easily accessible by either walk, bus or taxi.
