About
Oda Nobunaga ordered one of his generals, Akechi Mitsuhide, to build Fukuchiyama Castle (in Japanese; Fukichiyama Jyou 福知山城) to use as a base, staging point and defensive barrier against his attacks on the "Tanba" area (Tanba is an old name for the area north-west of Kyoto). After the battle of Sekigahara, Arima Toyouji became the lord and built the castle up to what it looked like today. The castle remained a "presence of power" throughout the region until the Meiji Restoration when the Meiji Government ordered its destruction.
The current Fukuchiyama castle is a "semi-faithful" reconstruction to the point that the original walls are the "original", and the current castle was built "as close as possible" to the originals plans.
As a side-note, Akechi Mitsuhide was the general responsible for Oda Nobunaga's death when he "forced" Oda to commit Suppuku (suicide) during a surprise attack of betrayal. The reason why Akechi betrayed Oda is a controversial topic because many historians have different thoughts on the matter.
