Enoshima Beach Main Area by Colorado Jones
About
Enoshima Beach is probably the most popular "Local" beach for Tokyo'ites. By viewing/clicking the "Enoshima Beaches" map image you can easily see where it is in relation to Tokyo. Its only about an hour from the biggest city in the world so you can image how crowded this place gets during the summer on a weekend. Honestly... if your a "Tourist" and visiting Japan for only a week or so, there is no reason to visit this attraction. This beach is more for those staying or living in Tokyo for an extended time because... well, there is really nothing special about it. The "Beach" and swimming start at the beginning of July and ends around the end of August, its a pretty short season in Japan because June is typically rainy season and in September the jellyfish start coming out and scare people away from the beach.
The beach itself is not that beautiful. The sand is brown, the water is typically brown and there are no waves to play around in. Basically the only reason people go to Enoshima is A.) to pick each other up, B.) its close to Tokyo and maybe a little C.) Families (not very many) who want to spend a day at a close beach. However, if your in need of seeing some "hot" bodies, male or female, and want to have some "social" fun, this is a great place to do it! In Japan the beaches are typically lined by "Beach Houses" (in Japanese: Umi No Ie 海の家 ) where you pay around 1,000 yen each ($10 US dollars) to be able to "stay the day". These beach houses offer nice clean Tatami Mats, lockers, changing rooms and best of all warm showers. Furthermore these "Beach Houses" tend to have an eating and drinking area where you can order food and LOTS of beer.
The reason the "Cost" is "2 Yen" is because the cost of the return ticket to/from Tokyo will be around 1,500 yen. Also, if you stay at a "Beach House" you'll be spending another 1,000 yen each and then factor in food and drink... could turn out to be around 5,000 yen each (or more) for a day at the beach. You can of course go the "Cheap Way" and bring your own lunch and umbrella... but that tends to be a pain carrying all that stuff on crowded trains. From Shinjuku Station you'll want to catch an Odakyu Line Train bound for Fujisawa (Check the "Directions" below and here is a map of Shinjuku Station). By all means... if you get confused or need help, don't be afraid to ask Station Attendants, they love to help people!
