About
Daitoku-Ji temple is the "headquarters" Zen Buddhist temple of the Rinzai sect; Daitoku-Ji shchool. It is a very large complex with over 20 temples and sub-temples. It also has many Zen Gardens making it a great place to see temple architecture and Zen Gardens in the same spot. Founded in 1319 it has seen its share of wars and fires and various structures have been rebuilt and or fixed over the centuries. The temple became a centerpiece for the Japanese Tea Ceremony where famous Warlords such as Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi partook. Oda Nobunaga's grave is located here at Daitoku-Ji although the building it is in is not normally open to the public.
