About
Several structures at the Daigoji Temple grounds are National Treasures of Japan and also hold other important cultural works such as artwork and paintings. The temple was founded in 874 and is a Buddhist temple of the Shingon sect. The temple was named after Emperor Daigo who entered Buddhist priesthood, shortly thereafter died and was buried at the temple. The pagoda at Daigoji is the oldest (yes, oldest) building in Kyoto and was built in 951... lucky to not have been destroyed or burned down in Kyoto's long history of fire and wars. The temple is complex as the main temple ground is at the base of the mountain and navigating through the area involves a hiking trail to reach other smaller temples. The Reihokan Museum is also located at the Daigoji temple which holds, preserves and displays the historic documents and art objects, including statues and paintings.
