Looking out from Chuzenji Temple over Lake Chuzenji
About
Chuzenji Temple was originally founded in 784 as a branch temple of the world heritage registered Rinnoji Temple by the Buddhist Monk Shodo Shonin at the foot of Mt. Nantai and later moved to its current location on the eastern bank of Lake Chuzenji. The principal image is six meter tall Kannon Statue "Juichimen-senju Kannon Boastsu" (Goddess of Mercy). It is a kannon image having eleven-faces and one thousand hands. This statue is designated as a national cultural property. It is said that the founding Monk Shodo saw the image of the Kannon on the Chuzenji lake and carved the statue out of a standing judas tree. Hence the statue is called "Standing Tree Kannon" or "Tachiki Kannon" (This temple is also called Tachiki Kannon).
On the second story of the temple is a rare grouping of all five Buddhist Deva Kings. There is also a fabulous giant painting of a white dragon on the ceiling (the same artist who painted the "Crying Dragon" at Toshogu Shrine). Also from this 2nd level you can get a great view of Lake Chuzenji along with the temple framing it (makes a great picture).
Chuzenji Temple is in the Nikko Area of Japan. See our Nikko Area page for a complete guide.
