About
The Chion-in Temple is connected to Honen who is the founder of the Jōdo Shū (Pure Land Sect) of Buddhism. This sect believes that sentient being are reborn in Buddha's Western Paradise by reciting the "Nembutsu" (Amida Buddha's name). It is located in the Higashiyama district of Eastern Kyoto and for many this temple is appealing from a cultural standpoint. The original Chion-in temple was built in 1234 and has very spacious grounds and large buildings. At the center of Chion-in is an open area with stone paths connecting the temple's main buildings.
