Yubatake in Kusatsu Onsen
About
Yubatake is the 2nd main attraction/reason why people come to Kusatsu (the 1st reason being they wish to soak in the hot water baths). It is however, the main source of hot springs water for many of the Ryokans and Bathing Houses in Kusatsu. This "hot water field" generates approximately 5000 liters of hot spring water per minute making it the most productive hot spring source in all of Japan. After the 70 C (158F) degree water boils up from a deep underground spring, it is conducted through several rows of man-made wooden boxes. Passing through these wooden boxes the hot spring water is cooled down a few degrees before it gets distributed to the various Ryokan and public baths.
Yubatake is located in the center of town center and about a 5 minute walk from the main bus terminal. There are many shops and Ryokans (Japanese Inns) surrounding the Yubatake and the town is pretty popular with Japanese tourists any time of the year. You will see (or you yourself can rent) many people in "Yukata" and "Geta" walking around the area which gives it a nostalgic and very Japanese atmosphere. There is a nice walkway around the Yubatake from which you can get great views and pictures (it is free).
