The "Takayama Autumn Festival" is the "Autumn" version of the Takayama Festival (they also have a "Spring" festival). This festival is not only popular because of the incredible floats that are paraded through the streets but also because the festival is in Takayama, one of Japan premier tourist destinations. This festival has also been described in magazines as "one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan" (although its this sites opinion that most all festivals in Japan are quite beautiful). There are about eleven "Yatai" floats which are designated as "Significant Intangible Folk Cultural Assets" by the Japanese government. Crowds line the streets to see these floats parade through town. When night rolls around, traditional Japanese lanterns, "Chouchin" are lit up and once again the floats take on an even more beautiful atmosphere.
If your planning on going to Takayama, you may want to consider moving your schedule around just a bit to coincide with this festival if its possible.
How to get there, from Nagoya:
1.) Take a Limited Express train from Nagoya station to JR Takayama Station (about 2 hours, 23 min.)
2.) The festival is held throughout the town.
